Big Bad Harley – 1963 Harley-Davidson Topper

In America, Scooter by Tom WackerLeave a Comment

Think of it. The wind in your hair, you are rolling down a long desert highway with the massive thunder of a Harley Davidson between your legs. Or not.

This is an 1963 Harley Davidson Topper. A 164 cc (10.1 CID) single cylinder two stroke motor (needs a gas/oil mix) that made a respectable 9 HP powered a continuously variable transmission to a top speed of 46 MPH. Started by a lawn mower type rope/recoil mounted on the deck between the floorboards.

The Topper was produced by HD from 1960 to 1965 and remains the only motor scooter that Harley made. The entirely enclosed motor suffered from lack of airflow at low speed which led to overheating. The Topper also came in a ‘detuned’ model (5 HP) for states that allowed for no license needed for the smaller size.

Harley-Davidson Topper - Rear

This Harley Davidson Topper (VIN: 63ah1348) has been sitting for two years so it will need a little bit of work. There’s minor cosmetic wear but the engine has spark and good compression. Find it for sale in Simi Valley, California with bidding up to $1,500 or a Buy it Now price of $5,500

I have one unanswered question. What sort of tattoo does a well dressed Topper rider wear?
