Bike-urious: 2014 In Review

In Blog by Abhi2 Comments

With the end of 2014 comes the close of the 2nd year of this little motorcycle site. Let’s take a moment to recap a few things:

First, I got a little crazy with social media (would love to see you follow Bike-urious at the following):
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram

I started getting vehicles to review:
Morgan 3 Wheeler

Honda Grom

Indian Chieftain

I met some incredibly passionate motorcyclists and got to share their stories:

George Dockray, the guy who built this:
Moto Guzzi Custom Segarra Replica - Right Side

Tony Foale, an under-appreciated genius who built this, among many other things:
Tony Foale - QL

Steve Gross, who tells some damn good stories about riding around on Ducatis like this F1:

Angus Dykman, who gets to buy and sell classics day in and day out:

PJ Rashidi, who helps create the Alpinestars gear that so many of you wear through his work in Racing Development:

…and there’s plenty more.

Oh yeah…and I featured a bunch of awesome motorcycles for sale! Based on web traffic, here are the 5 most popular bikes I featured in 2014.

Honda Grom - Right Side
1.) 2013 Honda Grom MSX125 Custom
For the second straight year, this Honda Grom was the most popular bike I featured. It seems riders of all ages are in love with the Grom and the many possibilities it affords, and they were constantly sharing it on Facebook and Pinterest. Credit to Zack B. for the find.

Honda CRF450X - Right Side - Snow
2.) 2005 Honda CRF450X with Snowbike Conversion
Another Honda, this bike caught the attention of readers because of the incredible RadiX Snowbike conversion from 2Moto. The conversion costs $4,700, making the final sale price of this bike at $4,500 a decent buy.

Maico 490 Mega 2 - Right Side
3.) 1981 Maico Mega 2 – I featured this bike back in 2013 but readers kept coming back to it. Probably because the Mega 2, besides having one of the best names I’ve ever heard, was also considered one of the greatest MX bikes ever. This bike sold for $9,210.

Honda CB750 Sandcast Prototype - Left Side
4.) 1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast Prototype – I realize that 3 of the top 4 are Hondas, but you can’t deny how special this is. One of the 4 original prototypes for the CB750, this bike is the one that American Honda used for all of its initial promotional materials. It sold for $148,100. Credit to Chip L. for the find.

Harley-Davidson Marlboro Man Replica - Right Side
5.) 1989 Harley-Davidson Marlboro Man Replica – I was surprised by this, but apparently people love the movie Harley-Davidson and the Marlboro Man and wanted a replica. This bike sold for $7,600. Credit to David N. for the find.

Bike-uriousity Finders:
You may have noticed that at the end of many posts, I say “This bike-uriousity brought to you by”, with the name of whomever found that interesting bike for sale. In 2014, these three readers submitted the most bikes that were shared with everyone:
Zack B – 60
Jim R – 54
David N – 39

Thanks to every one of you for following along, it’s been a pleasure getting to meet so many of you and share my love of motorcycles in the process. If I haven’t met you yet, don’t hesitate to drop me a line at abhi@bike-urious.com. I love learning about the people read Bike-urious. Here’s to an excellent 2015 – I hope you enjoy what comes next!
