Alright, the “Bought on Bike-urious” aspect is a bit of a stretch, but the bike is just so fantastic that I just have to share it. The best bikes for sale, and some good ol' motorcycle shenanigans.

Instagram post 2192355600306556013_720183564 When Gilera introduced the Saturno in the 1940s, it was one of the best motorcycles you could buy. The problem for most riders is that the cost reflected it – Motorcycle Classics said they sold for the approximate price of a small Italian apartment in the day. The model name (and the iconic red color) were very special to Gilera, so when the firm decided to create the new Saturno (at the request of their Japanese importer), you can believe that they wanted it to be special. The original production figures were supposed to be 1,000 bikes in Japan and 100 bikes in Italy. While Gilera eventually ended up offering the bikes in more countries, none were officially sold in the US. But @stuartparrcollection is selling one in New York with less than 50 miles on the clock!⠀
⠀
In the 80s, Gilera had developed a 4-stroke water-cooled single that they used for their off-roader Dakota in 350cc and 500cc guises. The engine was quite advanced and featured dual overhead cams, which was part of the reason why the motor was named the Bi4. Gilera’s Japanese importer requested that the company use this engine in a road bike, so the idea for a modern cafe racer was born. The Bi4 engine was thrown in a trellis frame and paired with Marzocchi suspension, Brembo brakes, and Marvic wheels. 45 horsepower was plenty for a bike that weighed less than 320 pounds, yielding a top speed of 115 miles per hour. ⠀
⠀

Instagram post 2191570695972972816_720183564 Congrats to @brodycox_, who was the first to identify that this was a Honda Solo! It's one of the many cool JDM vehicles available for sale at @cyclerefinery (they also have a Honda Zook right now)!⠀
⠀
The Solo was announced in March of 2003 as a “cheery, stylish, around-town leisure bike” with an air-cooled 50cc single pulled from the Super Cub.⠀
⠀
It was the fourth model in what Honda called the “N Project”, a series of two-wheelers “designed to deliver to its owners the pleasure of owning and riding a bike that serves as a fashion accessory in addition to providing convenient daily transportation.” The other examples were the Ape, Zoomer (sold in the US as the Ruckus), and the Bite.⠀
⠀
It was available in three standard colors: Parrot Yellow, Matte Flat Silver Metallic, and the Monza Red of this example. There were also three optional colors – Bice Blue, Classical White, and Black. There were color options for the tank, frame, light buckets, fender covers, seats, grips, and bar/engine finishes. In total, there were 285 options for how your Solo could look.⠀
⠀
The four-stroke single was paired with a three-speed rotary transmission that was operated with an automatic centrifugal clutch.⠀
⠀
Honda’s goal was to sell 4,500 units of the Solo a year, but I’ve been unable to determine how many were actually produced.⠀
⠀
I actually got a chance to try it for myself and I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable it was. It was also significantly quicker than Vy’s Honda S90 – this really would make for a great commuter if you were only on city streets.⠀

Instagram post 2179949146140538013_720183564 One of the many highlights from my recent ride out to Texas was a stop in New Braunfels to visit @texastwostrokes.⠀
⠀
Turns out he loves four strokes as well, and he's rehabbed a KZ1000 MkII that will make for an excellent rider. It's currently on eBay with no reserve!⠀

Instagram post 2176515234198374997_720183564 The photos are crap but the bike is so good that we'll soldier on. This is a 2004 @yamahamotorusa WR450F 2-Trac - the suffix comes from the fact that it utilizes an @ohlinsusa-developed two-wheel drive system!⠀
⠀
Unlike most 2WD motorcycle setups, Yamaha and Ohlins went hydraulic with a pump above the gearbox that pushes fluid to a hydraulic motor in the front wheel hub. The front gets a maximum of 15% of the power that the rear gets. Plus, Ohlins chipped in fully-adjustable suspension front and rear and a steering damper.⠀
⠀
In the 2004 Dakar Rally, David Frétigné placed seventh overall (as a rookie) and first in the 450cc class on a 2-Trac, beating out several riders on 660 and 950cc bikes.⠀
⠀
Production numbers vary – I’ve seen claims that Yamaha built 445 between 2004 and 2005, some people say that just 250 were built in 2004, and others say that Yamaha wanted to build 250 in 2004 but far less were actually created. I'm not sure what number is right, but I am sure that this is a rare find.⠀
⠀
Link in bio for more information and a link to get in on the bidding on eBay. The bike is in Blaine, Washington and the opening unmet bid is $6,500 with about a day to go!

Instagram post 2169826292556348374_720183564 @alpinestars recently hosted a Friends and Family track day at Willow Springs, and it was tremendous. I got to meet a bunch of my personal heroes (including @robbiemaddison!) and try some new-to-me bikes (like a @honda_powersports_us NSR250SP from @iconicmotorbikes) on a new-to-me track.⠀
⠀
Link in bio for more of my thoughts and pictures of an amazing day on two wheels! Can't wait for the next one.⠀

Instagram post 2168342710910424073_720183564 BSA made 3 different versions of the B50 - you can probably guess what the B50MX was for based on the name. It was offered starting in 1971 for off-road competition, but within a couple of years BSA was dead and some remaining stock was sold off as the Triumph TR5MX. Expect 34 horsepower out of the out of the 499cc single, to motivate 240 pounds of bike.⠀
⠀
In this case, you also expect a bike that has never been titled! It's said to be “100% Original including Tires, seat, grips, fenders, exhaust and spark plug” with just 10 hours of use, and it's still on the original MSO.⠀
⠀
Link in bio for more information and to buy it for yourself - the asking price is $6,995 in Wilsonville, Oregon.
