Classic Trials – 1954 Matchless G3L

Post Listing Update: This Matchless did not meet reserve with 4 bids up to $3,350.

Originally developed for the British military, the “L” version of Matchless’ G3 (L stood for Lightweight) ended up becoming one of the most popular motorcycles of the time because the Teledraulic forks were a significant improvement over the usual girder units. This example truly benefits from the suspension upgrade because it has been converted for trials competition.

After the war, the G3/L became a popular trials mount because they weighed 56 pounds less than the G3 and there were plenty around to use! Unfortunately, over the years the model kept gaining weight without gaining power, though there were upgrades: in ’49 a swingarm rear suspension was added and in ’51 the motor got an aluminum head. For more information, check out Matchless WD.

This example (VIN: 54 G3L25258) has been completely set up for trials with a rebuilt magneto, new Amal carb, trials footpegs, and a trials kick start lever. The original parts are included and this is only being offered with a bill of sale.
