Look Twice – 1974 Ducati 750 GT

In Custom, Italy, Sport by Abhi2 Comments

8-31-20 Update: 5 years later, this custom GT is back on the market. It hasn’t been ridden since it last sold – hopefully the next owner changes that! Find it for sale in Marina del Rey, California with bidding up to $10,000 and the reserve not yet met here on Iconic Motorbike Auctions.

Post Sale Update: after being relisted, this custom GT sold for $27,500.

When I first saw a thumbnail of this Ducati, I assumed it was a 900SS due to the black and gold paint scheme. But a second look revealed that this is quite an interesting custom – a 750 GT restored as the seller “would have loved to see from the factory.”

The bike was restored in 2009 and it has “cues from many of the early Ducati iconic models”, like the black/gold of the 900SS, the “Z” stripe from the 750 Sport, curved Conti exhaust pipes from the 750 prototype, and amusingly, a fly painted in the sight glass as a tribute to the California Hotrod, which had an actual fly cast into the tank.

This is quite a build, and it should be noted there are some modern touches for the sake of the ‘riding experience’ – Dyna electronic ignition, Works shocks, Race Tech fork springs, and front brakes from a Ducati 996. In the seller’s words, “Brakes and suspension are as far as I would go to modernize the bike though, the idea was to keep it as close to what the factory could have produced in 1974 as possible.” How’d he do?
