What a Story – 197x Tony Foale Honda CB750

In England, Japan, Race by Abhi1 Comment

6-28 Update: Year of bike in title changed to reflect Tony’s comment.

Post-Listing Update: Unfortunately, this bike only got one bid and did not meet reserve at the opening bid of $10,000. I can’t believe there wasn’t more action on this bike.

We love listings like this – a rare bike, an interesting back story, and great pictures. Just sit back and enjoy. Tony Foale was an Australian engineer who moved to England to pursue his passion of racing motorcycles. Like Rickman and Dunstall, Foale got into the business of building custom frames. Unlike most of his competitors, he focused on electronic and mathematical models to determine what he thought the best chassis could be for racing bikes. He was quite successful for motorcycles and sidecars, and he eventually went on to write a couple of books and several magazine articles. One of the best results of all his research was the Tony Foale Honda CB750.

Tony Foale Honda CB750 - Front

Originally, the larger CBs (750 and 900) utilized a tubular frame over the top and rear of the engine, with engine weight carried by head mountings. Foale was way ahead of the time and converted the engine into a stressed member of the frame. In addition, he utilized the spine tube for oil storage, and converted the rear suspension to a monshock. But the coolest thing of all was his conversion of the front end to leading link suspension. Like we said…way ahead of his time.

Tony Foale Honda CB750 - Left Side

This specific Tony Foale Honda CB750 has a great story. The seller realized that he was missing the leading link front end with his kit, but he couldn’t find one. After reaching out to Tony himself, and then partnering with Racetech and Yoshi over at Garage Company, the seller was able to re-create the iconic front end. Trust us when we say you MUST go to the link and read the seller’s story.
