Post Listing Update: Despite 33 bids up to $23,100, this Square Four did not meet reserve. We’ve featured a few Square Fours here (even one just a week ago), but the beautiful photos and restoration work make this example worth a second look.
Ariel Powered – 1959 Norton “Esquire”
2-27-17 Update: Nearly 2 years later, Tom W notes that this bike is back up for sale. Find it still in Bend, Oregon with bidding up to $6,000 and the reserve not yet met or a BIN of $15,000 (down from the original ask of $18,500) here on eBay. You’re probably familiar with the Triton, the pairing of a Triumph …
1954 Ariel Square Four MKII Custom
You don’t normally think of an Ariel Square Four as the platform for a British custom, but this bike was given a 2.5 year long frame off restoration and turned into a ‘cafe racer’ in the process. I’m not entirely thrilled with the results – but what do you think?
1956 Ariel Square Four Mk II
The Ariel Square Four design goes all the way back to 1931, soon after Edward Turner designed an interesting new four-cylinder motorcycle engine formed from two OHC parallel twins. The design became known as the square four engine, and lent its name to this Ariel motorcycle.
Rare in the US – 1962 Ariel Leader
11-5-15 Update: The last time I featured this bike, it did not meet reserve as bidding stopped at $4,545. It seems that the bike has transferred hands to Bator International, who is now offering it up in Ojai, California with better photos and a BIN of $5,950 or best offer here on eBay. Never imported to the US, the Ariel …
Running Barn Find – 1937 Ariel RH Racer
You probably wouldn’t guess from the cosmetic state of this bike, but this Ariel Red Hunter racer recently got a new spark plug and some gas and it actually fired up. It’s obviously still going to need plenty of work, but this is a very cool find.
In Australia – 1955 Ariel HS 500
A 500cc scrambler, the Ariel HS was a competition version of the Red Hunter. Approximately 1,000 HS’s (which stood for Hunter Scrambler) were built between ’54 and ’58, and they were intended to compete against Catalina Scramblers out on the track.
1959 Ariel Leader
Post Sale Update: This Leader sold for the BIN of $8,500. Never imported to the US, the Ariel Leader was quite unique with the enclosed design. It was introduced in 1958 but production ended when the Ariel went out of business in 1965.
1952 Ariel VHA
Post-Sale Update: After being relisted, this Ariel sold for $12,588 with 24 bids on eBay. The Ariel Red Hunter was a long standing legend – but for just two years (’52 & ’53), they made an all-alloy engine variant called the VHA. Here’s a beautifully restored example of this hard to find bike.
1948 Ariel Deluxe KG 500
A model built for just 3 years, the Deluxe KG was Ariel’s lower level trim of their 500cc twin (you may be familiar with the higher spec Red Hunter KH).
1958 Ariel Cyclone
A 650cc high-compression variant of the Huntmaster, the Ariel Cyclone was a very rare bike. It seems that the list of documented Cyclones is 174 over two years of production. Ariel called it their “Super Sports Twin”, thanks to a 40 horsepower engine that was an option on the Huntmaster.
Huntmaster – 1959 Ariel FH
In 1954, Ariel introduced the FH, better known as the Huntmaster. It shared the majority of it sengine with the 650cc A10 engine of BSA, but it was surrounded by an all-new frame with a swingarm and paired with a Burman transmission.
