Video Intermission – Racing in Cocaine Valley

Reader Wynkin de W shared this fascinating video with me and I immediately knew I had to pass it along. It’s a 25 minute long documentary about an annual motor-rickshaw race in the VRAEM, a remote valley that produces 70% of Peru’s cocaine. The director calls it a ‘Mad Max’ style event with 50 vehicles on a dirt track, though they focus on one individual named Omar. Omar wants to race so badly that he stays longer than the time he was given for his military leave, and he works on his family’s coca farm so he can afford to race.
