Post Sale Update: This Penton sold for $10,100 after 56 bids on eBay in La Plata, Maryland.

In 1968, John Penton and KTM started their fruitful relationship when they built some prototypes that eventually became the Penton Berkshire, powered by Sachs 100cc engines. In ’73, the Penton Hare Scrambler was introduced with a new 250cc KTM engine, and the rest was history.

The new 250cc engine was surrounded by a chromoly frame and paired with a six speed transmission, Akront wheels, Motoplat ignition, and 35mm Ceriani forks. The enduro version had a MSRP of $1,575 and weighed 220 pounds. For more information on the Hare Scrambler, check out this write-up from Hemmings.

This example (VIN: 51288009) shows just 284 miles on the odometer and the seller says that number reflects use after the bike was rebuilt and upgraded with a motor “freshening”, the dual sport kit for street legality (including a Baja Designs headlight), new aftermarket expansion chamber, new wheels, new tires, and more. I love the way this thing looks, and I hope you do, too!
