Editor’s Note: Here’s the first of what I’m sure will be many features from our newest contributor, Ted Clough!

Montesa is a Spanish company that was formed in 1944. Interestingly, one of the founders was Francisco “Paco” Bulto, who later went on to form Bultaco in the late 50’s. Montesa initially built small street bikes and had some success in road racing and enduros in the 50’s. In the mid-60’s they developed a 250cc engine which became the basis for a very successful trials bike. Montesa won Spanish and World trials championships through the 70’s and 80’s in the hands of riders such as Pedro Pi, Ulf Karlsson, and later the great Dougie Lampkin.

Montesa Cota 247 - Front Left

The Cota started out as a 250 and was later bumped to 350. This Cota is a 1970, completely restored, claimed to run great. Very little other information is provided, which seems to be very common these days in Craigslist ads. The fiberglass looks good in these pictures, but I’m trying to figure out where the exhaust is – I assume it ends under the seat…

If you’re tired of hurting yourself in Vintage Motocross, maybe it’s time to give Vintage Trials a go…this would be a great way to start! Find this Montesa for sale in Upstate South Carolina for $2,700 here on Craigslist.
