Last month I shared an interesting RD400 build from Julian Farnham – he unfortunately passed away so his widow is selling his collection. This fascinating creation is what Julian called the AK-1, a $4,750 chassis kit that enabled buyers to utilize the EX500 motor with a seriously upgraded frame and modern components.
Per a comment on this Kneeslider article, Julian said that the AK-1 frame is 12 pounds lighter than stock, much stiffer, has 5 degrees shartper rake, and moves the engine 2″ forward for better weight distribution. The kit was designed to work with Suzuki GSX-R forks, wider 17″ wheels, and a Yamaha R6 fuel tank.
It’s definitely a lot of work for a bike powered by a Ninja 500 motor but it’s very cool and this example comes with a spare frame kit – both the bike and the kit have their own California VINs and are titled (though the complete bike is salvaged). I hope someone makes it a runner again and completes the second bike, it’s such a cool build!
