No Reserve – 1971 Hodaka Super Rat

This Hodaka Super Rat is one of the many dirt-oriented trailies Hodaka created in the 60s and 70s, featuring some of the best names in the business, like Dirt Squirt, Road Toad, and my absolute favorite – the Combat Wombat. I was going to say that the last option would be a great band name, but it seems an “Australian political hip-hop crew” has beat me to it.

But back to the Super Rat. It was originally supposed to be called the Ace 100MX (it was replacing the Ace 90), but a little anecdote as detailed in this article by Motorcross Action Magazine about the bike explains why that changed:

…the prototype bike had “SR,” meaning “special racer,” painted on the airbox cover. It was Roger Phillips at Pabatco who made the sarcastic statement, “What is that? A Super Rat?”

This specific Super Rat (VIN: B-57993) is claimed to be highly original – it hasn’t had any restoration or paint touch-ups, though a few ‘minor’ items have been replaced. The seller says the only non-stock items he can find are an aftermarket reed cage intake and silencer. The seller is Arizona Mike’s Vintage MotoCross Bikes – check it out if you want to drool over some cool MXers!
