No Reserve – 1983 BMW R65 Custom

Post Sale Update: This custom R65 sold for $7,525 after 31 bids on eBay, though the sale may not have gone through as it was relisted.

Built by Magnum Opus out of Wilmington, North Carolina, this BMW R65 looks a lot faster than it used to thanks to the Martini Racing livery.

The R65 was never a fast bike, but the seller says that the custom work has shaved off nearly 100 pounds. I don’t know if I see that much of a diet happening here, but any weight loss is good, and the motor is said to put out a little more power thanks to Mikuni VM34 carbs and some tuning. In addition to the custom tank, this bike features a custom subframe, seat, and tail. The gauges were ditched for a GPS speedo, the forks were rebuilt and shortened, the brake calipers were rebuilt, and it’s got new shocks and tires.

It bums me out a little bit that this started as a R65LS and not a regular R65 because I dig the LS fairing, but I’m going to assume/hope that the original bodywork is still lying around somewhere. What do you think of the final result here?
