Considering that you can buy a brand new SR400 from Yamaha for $5,999, how do you feel about a classic SR500 for $4,500?

Approximately 15,000 examples of the SR500 were built between 1978 and 1981. Top speed was just shy of the ton thanks to 33 horsepower and a 353 pound dry weight. The bike was released after Yamaha had tremendous success with the XT500 and they decided a street oriented bike built around the 500 single was a good idea. They were right. For more on the SR, check out this article on Motorcycle Classics. Oh, and about the new SR400? It’s got a drum brake in the back while thie SR500 has a disc.

Per the seller, this bike was “recently restored to a high standard” with lots of new parts – brake lines, master cylinders, calipers, oil lines, fork seals, tires, paint, and more. The carb was rebuilt and the bike is said to run perfectly. The odometer shows 7,150 miles and the seller notes some minor flaws of “mar” in the seat and some chrome pitting. Despite the claim of restoration, the seller also goes on to say that this is “as nice an original, unmodified example of the twin-disc-brake SR 500 you will find outside of a collection or museum.” Not sure he can have it both ways, but it still seems like it’d be a fun classic to enjoy.
