1 of 700 – 1961 Velocette Viceroy

In England, Scooter by AbhiLeave a Comment

Post Listing Update: This Viceroy did not get any interest at the opening bid of $12,500.

One of Velocette’s least-known creations is a scooter called the Viceroy. It made sense in theory but sales were poor and production ended after just 700 were sold over 4 years (1960-1964). Obviously, they’re now hard to find, especially in the US.

The motor is a 250cc flat twin two-stroke that sends approximately 15 horsepower through a 4-speed transmission and a shaft drive. The Viceroy was all about ease of use, which is why it also came with an electric starter. It was capable of cruising at 65 miles per hour. According to Stuff, “leftover engines were used in early hovercraft experiments” but they don’t have any additional information.

The seller of this example (VIN: S446) says that only one is known in the US, though I did feature one in Florida back in August of 2018. This has just 80 miles and it’s equipped with the original tires. The seller says that it’s like new and that there are no cosmetic issues, though it’s not explicitly stated that this Velo runs.
