1947 Indian Chief

In America, Cruiser by AbhiLeave a Comment

My favorite cruiser is probably the Indian Chief. There are usually plenty for sale around the country at any given time, so I try to avoid flooding this site with them. But every once in a while I see one that stands out, and you’re thus forced to see it.

Indian Chief - Front

Built for just over 31 years, the Chief was one of Indian’s most popular models. With a 74 ci (1,213 cc) V-Twin engine well-known for reliability, hand shifter and foot clutch, this Indian Chief was capable of 85 miles per hour from the factory. Interestingly enough, while the right hand grip handled the customary throttle duties, the left side grip was a manual spark advance. From an aesthetic standpoint, the Chief features the large front fender that everyone now associates with Indian.

Indian Chief - Gauges

This specific Indian Chief (VIN: CDG2129) is a numbers-matching, fully restored example. The restoration occurred in the 1990’s, and it was performed with all NOS parts except for a Kiwi speedo and fender light. The engine was completely rebuilt with .010 oversized pistons, and it has plenty of new (again, NOS) parts. The paint job is a beautiful black/champagne two tone scheme. The engine still needs to be broken in, but there are no leaks. I really do adore the paint on this beauty.
