1970 was the end of the line for the Royal Enfield company. Originally an ammunition and small arms manufacturer they started making motorcycles in 1898 with a sourced motor and produced their own motor in 1901. They went broke then re chartered in 1910 as ‘The Royal Enfield’ Company. For the next 60 years they produced storied motorcycles for the military and civilian markets.

Royal Enfield Interceptor - Rear Left

The 1970 (and last) Royal Enfield Interceptor featured a 736 cc twin cam OHV parallel twin motor that produced a very respectable 60 HP. A 4 speed meshed transmission with a 450 LB weight pushed the top speed well over 100 MPH and current literature claimed a ¼ mile in less than 14 seconds. Twin shoe front and a single shoe rear brake were not very good, even for the day. The 1970 Interceptor MK II was the absolute pinnacle of the Royal Enfield line. All machinery and parts were sold to an Indian company in 1970 and the Royal Enfield name lives on.

Royal Enfield Interceptor - Gauges

This 1970 Royal Enfield Interceptor is advertised as a good running 4,600 mile survivor located in Big Lake, MN. Bike is listed with bidding up to $7,950 right

It may be the best of the British Twins from 1970 and one of the least known.
