Post Listing Update: This Last Edition did not meet reserve despite 23 bids up to $5,501.

In 1984, BMW Motorrad thought the boxer motor was done. The K-series (you may remember it as the Flying Brick) had been introduced 2 years prior as the future of BMW, so it only seemed fitting to kill off the flat twin that had served the company from the beginning with a special “Last Edition”. 740 examples were built across varying models like the base R100, the RS, RT, S, and CS. Well, passionate boxers fans pushed back and BMW ended up bringing back the boxer motor (with a monolever rear end) two years later, so while these bikes are special, they aren’t the last!

As you might expect, owners of the Last Edition bikes were not happy that they paid extra for a collectible that lost significance soon after purchase. In 1988, BMW tried to make amends with a free System helmet, though that probably didn’t do much to help. Still, it’s a fun footnote in BMW’s history.

This example (VIN: WB1043508E6177220) is claimed to be an all original survivor with 5,453 miles. Everything works though there’s some minor cosmetic issues – “red spots” on the top of the tank and some paint fade/oxidation/wear on metal parts. Both front and rear brakes have been rebuilt, and the bike comes with the OEM luggage.
