1989 Suzuki RGV250 SP VJ21

Last week I shared a fun VJ22 SP that we had over on the auction site, and I think this predecessor from the same seller is visually even better. I guess I like soda over cigarettes?

Introduced at the end of the 80s, the RGV250 was filled with design cues from Suzuki’s 250cc Gamma Grand Prix racer. When de-restricted, it produced over 60 horsepower to motivate just 282 pounds of dry weight. Visor Down called it “the purest and most race-bred two-stroke track tool ever to make it into a showroom.” The VJ21 (first generation RGV250) an impressive machine with its V-Twin two stroke engine, Mikuni carbs, and alloy beam frame. The SP (Sports Production) version took it one step further with a bump in power, close-ratio gearbox, and fully adjustable suspension with a remote reservoir for the rear shock.

This example (VIN: VJ21A110175) has 4,308 kilometers (2,627 miles). The seller is a good friend of Iconic who just sold a VJ22 with us. He worked at a Suzuki dealership when he was 19 and had to uncrate a VJ21SP in Pepsi livery one day – that’s when he swore to himself that he would own one in the future. “I gave it a good service and renewed anything that needed it and repaired what needed it, rode it with the side fairings removed to see if there were any issues with the engine and to keep the panels safe because they’re irreplaceable. I think I may have put 250 miles on it, checked everything again 3 times and then gave it a thorough clean and pickled it over ten years ago.” In preparation for the listing, the seller had us clean, service, and sync the carbs. We also replaced the air filter, the battery, the engine oil, the transmission oil, and the radiator cap. Finally, we flushed the cooling system, painted the rear brake reservoir cap, stripped and serviced the front calipers, and flushed the brake fluid.

The tail has been signed by Kevin Schwantz.
