70 Pound Diet – 2003 BMW R1200CLC Custom

In Cruiser, Custom, Germany by AbhiLeave a Comment

The seller of this bike bought this as a stock CLC with 81K miles on it, and then customized it into something that feels like a predecessor to the K1600B. In the process, it saved a whopping 70 pounds!

The R1200 was Germany’s attempt at the cruiser market. In the mid 90’s, BMW was using a 1100cc boxer engine for almost all of their R-series bikes. When they bumped up capacity, the first bike to receive the 1200cc engine was…this cruiser, and not the GS adventure or S sportbike. Producing 61 horsepower and 72 pound feet of torque, power wasn’t an issue, but it was ‘different’ than the V-Twins that dominated Harley and the Japanese Harley clones. It was smooth, distinctive, and surprisingly nimble in the corners for a 564 pound (wet) bike, but Americans never really caught on to it.

For more information, you can check out the seller’s build thread here. Or if you’re short on time, here’s a video:

The seller has clearly put a lot of time and money into this, and someone in the build thread expresses surprise that he’s only asking for $4,500 . His explanation is “it has 81K miles on it, and while it runs great, has new tires and full service, it is still a 5-10 foot bike.” That might be true, but I dig it.
