This Yamaha R6 has been modified by the seller to be rideable by someone who is paralyzed from the waist down. It’s quite fascinating – a Translogic push button shifter takes care of swapping gear ratios, while custom electronic outriggers take care of keeping the bike upright at a stop. The outriggers are deployed via a toggle switch mounted in …
1936 Velocette GTP
Post Listing Update: This GTP did not meet reserve despite 22 bids up to $6,526 on eBay. Velocette started out building motorcycles with two-stroke engines. The culmination of their two-stroker line was the Velocette GTP, a lightweight bike that was produced for 16 years.
Video Intermission – The Y2K Turbine Motorcycle
I’ve always been intrigued by this bike since discovering it on Jay Leno’s Garage. Mat Oxley calls it “an exercise in technological masturbation” and “not a complete motorcycle”. Once you listen to the Rolls Royce helicopter engine spool up, you probably won’t care:
1958 Ducati 200 Elite
Post-Listing Update: This Elite did not meet reserve at $16,110 on eBay. I know I featured a couple of these just a few days ago, but this Elite is an absolute gem. The Ducati 200 Elite was the Italian firm’s largest-displacement bike when it was introduced – a whopping 204cc when they bored out the popular 175cc engine.
1971 Speedway Widowmaker
The Speedway Widowmaker has one of the greatest names ever affixed to a motorcycle. It also doesn’t sound like something you’d want to buy your kid who was learning on a tiny 80cc two-stroke.
1965 Honda CB77
Here’s a lovely Superhawk that was restored last year. The motor’s had some work done, including a new top end, and the frame, swingarm, and center stand were powdercoated. I’d ditch the CYB seat for the original, but the seller’s folder full of receipts should be helpful in maintaining peace of mind. Find this CB77 for sale here on Craigslist …
1993 BMW R100GS-PD
Post Listing Update: This Paris-Dakar did not meet reserve despite 9 bids up to $5,555. The BMW BMW R100GS-PD (PD stands for Paris-Dakar) is one of my favorite older dual-sports, even though I think BMW had a lot of trouble developing attractive paint schemes for it. The seller of this bike may have agreed, which is why this GS features …
Fully Faired – 2007 Ducati Sport 1000S
Post-Sale Update: This blur of red sold for a undisclosed best offer lower than $13,850. Take one Ducati Sport 1000S, add the full front fairing and you’ve got yourself a beauty in red. This example (VIN: ZDM1WABP87B008711) has 7,418 miles and is obviously equipped with the very rare lower fairings. It also comes with the original fairings, but who cares? …
1960 Norton Dominator Model 88
Post-Sale Update: After getting no action at the original asking price of $14,500, the seller relisted this bike and it sold for $13,500. Then due to a non-paying bidder it had to be relisted, and bidding did not meet reserve at $10,000. The Norton Dominator was brought to challenge Triumph’s Speed Twin. The Dommie was built for about 15 years, …
Video Intermission – MotoGP Saves in 2013
Last week I featured some excellent MotoGP saves from 2012, and y’all seemed to enjoy that. So let’s move forward a year to the saves from 2013. I apologize in advance for the unnecessary and silly music:
1974 Rickman Montesa 250VR
Did you see the blue Rickmans from last week and think to yourself, I really would prefer a Montesa 250cc engine? Well, you’re in luck. The 250VR motor was highly competitive in its day, and most people felt that the Rickman frame was an extensive upgrade. Put them together and you’ve got a great set of wheels. This example runs …
1980 Moto Morini 350 Strada
The Moto Morini 3 1 / 2 is one of my favorite bikes from the 1970s. Expensive when it was released (the price point was comparative to bikes with twice the engine size), it was an incredible handler that was also capable of the ton. I’m still constantly surprised with how little attention the 3/2 gets, but I’m not surprised …
Chappy – 1977 Yamaha LB80IIAD
Also known as the “Chappy”, here’s a cute little step-through scooter that’s in excellent condition. As you’d probably guessed, it was released to compete with Honda’s tiny trail bikes – the most common options were the LB 50 and this LB80, the latter of which features a 82cc engine and a 2-speed, 2-stage transmission. The LB80 is capable of about …
Ending Soon – 1975 Rickman-Metisse CR
To celebrate a win in the Isle of Man Production II, Rickman built 52 Competition Replicas as complete bikes out of the factory. Here’s an example that’s claimed to be the last of the 52, which was produced in 1974 and registered as a 75. It’s still got all of the original Rickman hardware – hubs, 41mm forks, and more. …
McQueen’s 1st Husky – 1968 Husqvarna 360
Here’s a Husqvarna 360 that’s claimed to have a history that no other bike can have – it’s the first Husky that Steve McQueen owned.
