Rare Restoration – 1936 Douglas Endeavour

Post Listing Update: This Endeavour did not get any action at the BIN of $45,000.

The Endeavour was a groundbreaking bike for Douglas, and their marketing materials reflected that notion with descriptions like “the motorcycle of the age, a masterpiece on who wheels…silent, safe, light, luxurious. The last word in engineering practice and design.“. Despite all that, very few were ever sold. I’ve seen production numbers quoted anywhere between 50 and 420, but there doesn’t seem to be any definitive answer. Still, it’s rare – and there can’t be many left.

Douglas Endeavour - Engine

The Endevaour features a 494cc flat twin connected to a shaft drive. This bike was the first time used a flat twin across the frame (think BMW boxer engines) as opposed to in-line. It was originally released in 1934 and while it wasn’t successful, it did set the future of Douglas motorcycle design in many ways.

Douglas Endeavour - Gauges

This example (VIN: AA185) was restored back in 2004 and it looks like it had some work done at Revival Cycles in 2013, according to this link. The seller says he’s only ridden it a few times, otherwise it stays in his collection.
